FLO Grills Austin Highlighted in American Statesman

Throughout many places in the world, the kitchen is located outside the home for practical purposes, such as easily dispersing heat.

The trend is starting to catch on with modern homeowners as well.

Chris Smith of FLO Grills, located at 13359 Highway 183 N., Suite 401, in Austin, said he is getting requests for outdoor kitchens in about half of the new homes being built.

“It’s an expected amenity now in homes about $250,000 and up,” Smith said. “It’s expected, just like finished garages and upgraded kitchens.”

Smith said adding an outdoor kitchen can be expected to bring about a 125 percent return on investment because of market expectation. The popularity of cooking outside also has increased with the desire to move the “living space” of the home outdoors as well.

“You basically have the guy who has replaced the cart (grill with a few extra components) right outside the kitchen window or door,” Smith said. “And I tell people all the time, once they make the investment, it becomes such an ease-of-use and a place to hang out that a lot of our customers say they’ll cook three to five times a week out there, where they never did that before on a cart.”
